Named for 19th Century African-American legal pioneer, Louis André Martinet, the society follows in his footsteps, working to "encourage interchange of ideas, promote legal scholarship, advance the science of jurisprudence, promote the administration of justice, uphold the order and ethics of the courts and the profession of law and promote the welfare of the legal profession in Louisiana."

Pro Bono Publico Award

This award recognizes an attorney, or law firm, that has provided exceptional pro bono legal services to the citizens of Louisiana. The services provided must exhibit at least one of the following characteristics: a) Demonstrated dedication to the development and delivery of legal services to the poor through a pro bono program; b) Contributed significantly toward developing innovative approaches to delivering volunteer legal services; c) Satisfied previously unmet needs extending services to underserved segments of the population; d) Litigated pro bono cases that favorably affect the provision of legal services to the poor; or e) Achieved legislation that contributed substantially to legal services for the poor.
